Saving Birds and Pollinators: Plant it and they will come!

We have embraced a gardening style in which neatness and orderliness are equated with health and success. This has contributed to environmental decline with a staggering loss of species, including beloved songbirds and butterflies. But there is another way. By working with nature, we can restore habitat in our own gardens, sharing this space with birds, lizards and pollinators, including beautiful monarch butterflies.

This talk will present compelling information on why gardening for habitat is so important, and practical tips on how to convert a resource-intensive yard to a natural, interesting and fun garden that provides sanctuary for many critters, including those of the human persuasion.

This talk will be co-hosted by Wendy Kerfoot (Board member of South Pasadena Beautiful) and Barbara Eisenstein (native plant expert, horticulturist and Manager of Friends of South Pas Nature Park). Please join us and share with your friends too!

Annual Meeting

This year our annual meeting will feature a repair workshop. This free community event is centered around empowering people to fix what’s broken. Volunteer repairers will guide you through the process of diagnosing and repairing your broken household items including; small appliances, toys, bikes and electronic devices. Jewelry and clothing repair is also welcome.

With this unique event as our annual meeting, we hope to empower and guide people in the disassembly and repair of their broken “stuff” that would otherwise be tossed out. It  also raises awareness of our throw away culture and encourages people to repair rather than replace.

SPB will provide tools and workspace for the repair of the broken items. Attendees are encouraged to bring any special tools or replacement parts which may be needed.  Items are limited to things small enough to carry (no large appliances please).

If you are interested in sharing your repair skills and would like to participate as a repair coach, please email us at: southpasadenabeautiful@gmail.com

The Repair Workshop will take place on Saturday, June 2nd from 3 to 6 p.m. at the South Pasadena Library Community Room.  1115 El Centro St., South Pasadena.  We invite you to come and socialize with other friends of SPB and celebrate this year’s many accomplishments including the new landscaping at the Library Park. Refreshments will be provided.
